The Uppsala University Hospital, which is Sweden’s oldest university hospital, needed a robust floor coating for its helipad, as leakage from the roof to the top floor had become a serious concern. During a major renovation at the hospital approximately 3,500m² of Flowfast was installed to provide a durable surface that would maintain its impermeable finish despite the wet environment and frequent heavy impacts from the helicopter.
The hospital had previously tried to use a series of paints to coat the helipad but none were able to cope with the conditions and quickly deteriorated. To overcome this obstacle Flowcrete supplied a specialist solution that was tailored to the helipad, with a membrane that would reduce movement to stop the coating from cracking, a primer to secure the bond between the membrane and coating and a finish able to withstand the worst of Sweden’s weather.
Another important aspect of the project was incorporating bright lines and signage to assist the helicopters navigation. This was also created using Flowfast, as it can be applied in a variety of colours that won’t dull or deteriorate.
Flowfast is a fast-curing solution, and in most cases reduces the time required to fully cure down to only two hours. This allows for follow on work or the commencement of operational activity much sooner than is usually possible.
