Case Study: London Luton Airport MSCP Rebuild

Installer: 4M
Systems Used: Deckshield Rapide ED1, Deckshield Rapide ID HB, Willseal 250with Veda coverplate
Location: Luton
Project Size: Approximately 55,000 sqm

The Project

Following a major fire caused by an electric vehicle, the original multi-storey car park (MSCP) at London Luton Airport was deemed beyond repair. A full replacement was required urgently to reinstate a critical asset supporting airport operations. The new structure, designed by Fatkin and built by BAM, features a steel frame and composite construction combining in-situ concrete with profiled steel decking.

Due to the high-profile nature of the site and the scale of the project, the waterproofing system needed to be not only durable and robust, but also fast curing and moisture tolerant to keep pace with the tight construction programme.

The Solution

Flowcrete worked closely with 4M to deliver a tailored car park waterproofing solution that addressed the client’s practical and commercial requirements. Our technical team recommended the use of two rapid-curing PMMA-based systems:

  • Deckshield Rapide ED1 for the 11,000 sqm exposed roof deck
  • Deckshield Rapide ID HB for 44,000 sqm of internal parking decks
  • Willseal 250 with Veda coverplate to seal GL12 movement joints

These solutions were chosen as a value-engineered alternative to a competitor’s system, offering a cost-effective option without compromising performance.

Flowcrete’s Deckshield Rapide systems enabled:

  • Fast-track application on damp concrete
  • Reduced disruption thanks to rapid cure times
  • A single-source solution for both deck waterproofing and movement joints

As of July 2025, the project remains on schedule for completion by the end of August. Despite a challenging programme, 4M has successfully mobilised a large, trained workforce to keep the project on track. The moisture-tolerant, rapid-cure properties of the Deckshield Rapide systems have allowed installation to proceed at speed, even during variable site conditions.

Once completed, the new MSCP will provide a durable and high-performance waterproofing solution capable of withstanding the demands of a busy airport environment. This project showcases Flowcrete’s ability to meet tight timelines and deliver comprehensive, high-quality solutions for major infrastructure developments.
